While Sylvester wrote numerous poems, his most famous, both during his life and after, was without question his English translation of Guillaume du Bartas’s ‘The Divine Weeks’. It is known that Sylvester’s English translation of Bartas had a direct influence on John Milton’s famous ‘Paradise Lost’.

Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas was a 16th-century French Huguenot poet who is best remembered for his epic poems ‘Weeks’ or ‘The Semaines’. These masterpieces were an expansion based on the Book of Genesis and the creation of the world.

  • ‘Tobacco Battered, & the Pipes Shattered’
