While Sylvester wrote numerous poems, his most famous, both during his life and after, was without question his English translation of Guillaume du Bartas’s ‘The Divine Weeks’. It is known that Sylvester’s English translation of Bartas had a direct influence on John Milton’s famous ‘Paradise Lost’.
Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas was a 16th-century French Huguenot poet who is best remembered for his epic poems ‘Weeks’ or ‘The Semaines’. These masterpieces were an expansion based on the Book of Genesis and the creation of the world.
This 1641 printing of the works and translations of Sylvester includes numerous poems such as:
- ‘Tobacco Battered, & the Pipes Shattered’
- ‘The parliament of vertues royal’
- ‘Paradoxe que les adversitez’ by Odet de La Noue’
