“The best, and most famous commentary on the Book of Colossians”

A rare folio edition of John Davenant’s “Commentary on the Book of Colossians”. The commentary has been continually reissued since the 17th-century, even as recent as 2005. Davenant provides a thorough exegesis of each verse of Colossians, and from its first appearance has been regarded as the most exhaustive treatment of this short but full Epistle of Paul. The practical applications, specially of chapters 3 and 4 which address morality, are extremely valuable. In this section, Davenant says,

“That filial obedience is perpetual, and is to be rendered even to the last breath of life . . . is manifest from the command itself, ‘Honour thy father . . . that thou mayest live long upon the earth’.”

Davenant also seeks to defend the Church’s celebrating of holy days, such as Easter and Christmas, which was surprising looked at negatively in the 17th-century. – He claims that they were “piously and prudently provided by the ancient fathers”-

The study from each verse is worth the study. The commentary is plain, but it provides much pleasure and profit for the reader. It is immensely useful as a spiritual instruction and devotional read.
