Pedro de Bivero was a 17th-century Spanish Jesuit author best-known for his books of religious emblems and Catholic doctrines, ‘Sacrum Sanctuarium’ and ‘Sacrum Oratorium’. These works contain, as Bivero put it, “sacred pious images figured and illustrated with emblems” in which he describes important aspects of Catholicism including the immaculate conception and the Virgin Mary, the coming of Jesus Christ, and to worship during the Eucharist. The illustrations depict biblical scenes, though many of them are allegorical in nature.

This first portion, “Sacrum oratorium”, focuses on the life of the Virgin Mary and her conception of Jesus. Many of the illustrations contains Mary, the Holy Child, and ‘New David’ (or, Jesus himself) in various allegorical and Biblical scenes. The illustrations are from Adriaan Collaert, a notable Belgian engraver.
