1630 Tabacologia TOBACCO in America Neander Medicine Nicotine Alchemy Smoking
The first account describing tobacco in America!
Johann Neander was an early 17th-century German physician who sought to prove that tobacco was a useful source of healing and health. He published the very first German treatise on tobacco and its uses in 1622. This work of pseudo-medicine and pharmaceuticals claimed that tobacco helps against common colds, infections, headaches, intestinal worms, drowsiness, toothaches, scurvy, kidney diseases, and arthritis. Tobacco was highly desirable and coveted throughout Europe for multiple purposes, and Neander was one of the first to clarify and gather all of its purposes into one important work. In ‘Tabacologia,’ Neander discusses the remarkable medicinal properties of tobacco, its power to cure diseases, and its use in surgery for wounds, ulcers, and abscesses. (Macinnes).
In addition to the medical properties of tobacco, Neander describes various types of pipes – Indian, Oriental, and European varieties – cultivation of tobacco, and first account of tobacco growing in the Americas.
