1622 Manuel de Sa Aphorismi Confessariorum on Forbidden Book Index Inquisition
Manuel de Sa was a 16th-century Portuguese Jesuit who’s only surviving theological treatise “Aphorismi confessariorum” was a controversial, censored work. It was put on the Librorum Prohibitorum for maxims and commentary that conflicted with common believes amongst other theologians.
Originally published in 1595, this work is considered to be de Sa’s greatest and most important work. In this work, de Sa writes about the powers of the church – for instance, he explains the duties and the powers that a bishop should have. It also includes sections on importance of indulgences and lives of martyrs. Even though it was a banned book, it remained popular and saw numerous reprints through 1632, including this rare 1622 edition.
