Edward Hoby was a 16th-century English diplomat under the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I of England. In 1612 controversialist Jesuit John Floyd wrote a treatise attacking Protestants, and in seeking to defend the Protestant pulpit, Hoby wrote his book ‘A Counter-Snarle for Ishmael Rabshacheh”. This book, while not long, makes numerous references to Saint Augustine, Lucian’s ‘Dialogues’, and Thomas Aquinas.
