Ulisse Aldrovandi was a 16^th-century Italian scientist who specialized in animals and birds. While he also studied philosophy, his best works were his studies in natural sciences. One of his best and, certainly most desirable works, was ‘Ornithologia’, an early study of birds. In fact, the term ornithology was coined by Aldrovandi at the end of the 1500s.

When his books on birds were first published, they were the most thorough and complete work on birds, covering the history of birds, their cultural importance and significance, role in food and medicine, and even their appearance in myths and legends.

This 1610 three-part tome is filled with 51 impressive full page illustrations that contain hundreds of figures of birds including: turkeys, geese, peacocks, chickens, roosters, quails, and birds-of-paradise. It should be noted that Aldrovandi included views of creatures that are not birds such as bats and even mythical creatures like the harpy!
