Giovanni Botero was a 16th-century Italian scholar who wrote on politics, theology, and philosophy, making commentaries on great thinkers such as Machiavelli, Locke, and Adam Smith. His works, while not substantially influential during his lifetime, were important to the development of political and economic thinkers in the early 17th-centuries, especially to Belgian scholar Justus Lipsius.
In 1608, Botero published ‘Memorable Illustrious Persons’, a collection of curious anecdotes and narratives of important writers, historians, theologians, economists, and more. With a clear and extensive list of contents, notable names include Saint Ambrose, Charles Borromeo, Philip II of Spain, Virgin Mary, Jesus and the Apostles, Thomas More, Saint Thomas Aquinas, numerous popes, and many, many more. In addition to ‘Memorabili’ this work is bound with Botero poetry entitled ‘La Primavera’.
