Julius Caesar Scaliger was a 16th-century Italian scholar who wrote a number of important orations and commentaries. One of his most recognizable works was his ‘Poetices Libri Septem’, or ‘Seven Books of Poetics’ – a collection of criticism of Aristotle’s ‘Poetics’ and works of Virgil, Seneca, and Homer. This work would become one of the most influential pieces in the development of literary criticism.
This edition, published in 1607, was collected and edited by Scaliger’s son, Joseph Justus Scaliger who is best known for his edition of, ironically, the letters of Julius Caesar.
