Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Martin Delrio was a 16th-century Jesuit who is undoubtedly best-known for ‘Disquisitionum magicarum’, an incredible book of magic, superstition, and witchcraft. Following the immense success of this book in 1599 and 1600, many readers assumed Delrio himself was a witch as the book presents witchcraft from a first-hand experience standpoint. However, Delrio’s experience was somewhat limited and he drew from reports of witchcraft and magic from all over the world – church history, Islamic magicians, and the witchcraft from ‘Hammer of the Witches’.

Other important topics found in this tome include the use of alchemy and the superstitious intents to subvert God and his creation.

This volume of ‘Magical Investigations’, as it is known in English, from the 1606 edition was published in Mainz. Interestingly, because of the connection Delrio made between witchcraft and church heresy, this book was used as a reference in the famous Salem Witch Trials at the end of the 17th-century.
