1604 Specchio di Guerra Panigarola BIBLE Woodcuts Illustrated Spiritual Warfare
Francesco Panigarola, a 16th-century Italian bishop, was a well-known preacher and author. His sermons garnered him his popularity as many of them were directed at Calvinists to renounce their religious beliefs and follow Catholicism. One of is his most famous works, “Specchio di Guerra”, was written as a supplement to spiritual combat and a biblical reference.
This book is filled with woodcuts depicting iconic biblical war scenes such as David defeating Goliath and the Philistines, and Gideon defeating the Midianites. These woodcuts are visually stunning and include incredible detail, not only in the image but also on the borders.
This second edition was printed by Bordone, an Italian printshop known for its reissues of 16th-century titles. They began printing in 1604 and no known editions of their works were printed after 1620. A relatively short printing career.
