The ‘Institutes of Justinian’ is a portion of the full Corpus Juris Civilis, largely based on the Institutes of Gaius. Justinian sought to reform Roman law and education. This work was originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook, they actually carried legal weight …as law!

 

These institutes have been edited with commentary for decades, some more popular than others, but Pierre Rebuffi’s is a highly important late 16^th-century edition. Rebuffi was a French jurist who was perhaps the most famous legal scholar of his day. He is most remembered for his ‘Commentary on the Constitutions’ which is a collection of various titles on Roman Law –
