Justus Lipsius was an important 16th-century Flemish philosopher whose work was written to restore a form of Stoicism that would be similar to Christian values. He also wrote an important work on the greatness and history of Rome, ‘Admiranda’. This work portrayed Rome in its greatest light, describing the fusion of cultural diversity including Greek, Jewish, Egyptian, Persian, and even Spanish influences on Rome. It is even thought to have been written as a guide for pilgrims and travelers who were venturing to Rome.
This 1598 Paris edition was published the same year as the year as the first printing in Antwerp.
