Jerome Commelinus’ 16^th-century version of ‘Aethiopica’ is the most important and famous edition of Heliodorus’s only known work. This work tells the story and history of the development of Ethiopia through the lens of an ancient Greek romance novel. It is also believed that that Torquato Tasso took significant liberties from ‘Aethiopica’ and used them in his famous book ‘Jerusalem Delivered.’

 

This 1596 edition used the Latin translation of Stanislaw Warszewicki, a translation that would be used for subsequent editions in other languages. This Latin edition is printed alongside the original Greek in parallel.
