Unsure? Ask an Expert!

William Whitaker was a 16th-century English Protestant scholar whose lectures were rooted in heavy criticism of Catholic theologians such as Bellarmine and Thomas Stapleton. Stapleton specifically gave Whitaker issues with his theology. Like many devout Catholics, Stapleton wrote extensively on the authority of the papacy and the Catholic Church. In one of his best works, ‘Adversus Thomae Stapletoni’, Whitaker refutes many of the theological claims made by Stapleton in his book ‘Authoritatis Ecclesiasticae defensio’.

This folio 1594 first edition of Whitaker’s reply to Stapleton is considerably rare and an excellent example of the literary battle between Protestants and Catholics during the 16th-century.
