Verrius Flaccus was a 1st century Roman grammarian who published the very first alphabetical Latin dictionary. This work was notable for becoming the basis for Sextus Pompeius Festus’s ‘Lexicon’, a work that was edited and compiled sometime during the 2nd century. This work is a collection of Latin words in which Flaccus and Festus provide the etymology of words, definitions, use in language, and references in Roman mythology.

This late 16th-century edition was edited by French scholar Joseph Scaliger. Scaliger includes commentary on notes on various lesser Roman gods as well as commentary on the orations of Cicero.
