Conrad Gessner was an iconic 16^th-century scholar who is best remembered for his early treatises on animal science. While other 16^th-century works of natural science existed in this era, few were written to expose the reality and existence of dragons! Gessner’s “Schlangenbuch” is one of the earliest and certainly the best works describing reptiles as a whole. The term ‘dragon’ was used to describe any sort of snake, scorpion, or slithering reptile.

 

First published in 1587, ‘Schlangenbuch’ was a comprehensive guide to dragons and the myths and folktales that were associated with such reptiles. This section of the work is focused primarily on the scorpion, complete with one of the earliest printed woodcuts of the scorpion!
