1582 ENGLISH ed Marcus Aurelius Diall of Princes Stoic Philosophy RARE Guevara
Antonio Guevara, a 15th-century man of letters, grew up in the court of Ferdinand and Isabella in Spain. His work, now, is considered of little more than historical interest, but his writing style and contents reflect the tastes of the court of Charles V, who he was writing for later in his life.
Two of his most famous works were ‘Book of Marcus Aurelius’ and ‘Diall of Princes’. The latter is an instructional novel written to provide modern rulers with direction on their reign and power. It reverences historical works of Cicero and Plutarch along with commentary on the military and political decision making of Roman Caesars, Alexander the Great, Xerxes, and of course Marcus Aurelius.
‘Libro di Marco Aurelio’ features a lengthy biography of Marcus Aurelius and includes published letters and ‘Meditations’ of Emperor Aurelius. This treatise is work on Spanish morality through the lens of the life of the famed Roman Emperor. From about 1530 to the end of the century, a notable increase of interest in Marcus Aurelius can be seen in Western Art. Guevara wrote this book hoping to capture some of the profits that could be gained from promoting Marcus Aurelius.
