1581 1ed Boccaccio Genealogy of the GODS Roman Mythology Betussi Italian Zoppini
“Human it is to have compassion on the unhappy”
― Giovanni Boccaccio
Giovanni Boccaccio was a 14th-century Italian poet and important humanist during the Renaissance. In 1360, Boccaccio composed ‘Genealogia Deorum Gentilium’ (‘Genealogy of the Gods’) – an important reference work on classical mythology. According to Malcom Bull,
“Boccaccio does his best to make sense of the complex genealogy of the gods. No subsequent mythographer followed his method of organizing material, yet Boccaccio’s Genealogia retained its prestige and was to remain the most important mythological manual until the late sixteenth century.” (Bull, 22)
Giuseppi Betussi was a highly important and influential 16th-century humanist and translator who was best known for his editions of Boccaccio Latin’s works into Italian. This 1581 edition is notable for charming illustrated initials throughout.
