Henri Stephanus, or Estienne, was a prolific 16th-century printer who began publishing works of Classical authors such as Aristotle, Xenophon, Thyucidides, Sophocles, and Herodotus. ‘Apologie pour Herodote,’ Estienne’s most famous treatise, is a monumental work of French prose and satire. Written as an apology of Herodotus, the book is actually a provocative attack on the Catholic Church. Renouard says of this book:

“Under the pretense of a defense of Herodotus, this book is a violent attack of Roman Catholicism and a satire of the sixteenth century society.”

In this piece of anti-Catholic propaganda, Estienne describes the main sins of the time, giving special attention to the sins of priests and church fathers. He addresses the prevalence of sodomy and slander within the Catholic Church.
