1567 Paul of Aegina Byzantine Medicine & Surgery Hermaphrodite Castration Arabia
“The object of our art being to restore those parts which are in a preternatural state to their natural, the operation of castration professes just the reverse. But since we are sometimes compelled against our will by persons of high rank to perform the operation, we shall briefly describe the mode of doing it.” – Paul of Aegina on Castration, Chapter 6.
Paulus Aegineta was a 7th-century Byzantine physician known for his collection of medical treatises. This curiously untitled work is a compilation of former writers and physicians.
Byzantine medicine drew largely from Greek and Roman tradition, but this work contains new ideas on bone structures. The work would become the standard text throughout the Arabic world for the next 800 years and was considered the most complete encyclopedia of medical knowledge. It includes information on hygiene, powers of food, doctrine of fevers, identifying excrement discharges, skin afflictions, intestinal worms, treating venomous animal bites, treating hydrophobia (rabies), surgery, extracting weapons from the skull, properties of various medicines, and how to make medicine. His surgical techniques included methods for castration and reconstructive surgeries performed on hermaphrodites.
This important collection of works was edited by Jean Desmoulins, who used the famous translation of Johann Giunterius of Andernach (or John Winter). (HoH 31)
