Theodosius II was a 5th-century Roman emperor who is best-remembered for his decree of the Codex Theodosianus. This set of laws was established by Theodosius II and his counterpart Valentinian III in the year 429. Saint Augustine, who died only a year later, was partial to the Theodosian Codex, not because of the Byzantine law implications per se, but because in it, Theodosius, like his grandfather Theodosius the Great, pushed for Christianity to be the official religion of the entire Roman Empire.

This highly desirable 1566 first Lyon edition folio was published by Rovillius and edited by Jacques Cujas who was known for his commentaries on Roman and Byzantine law.
