Giovanni Boccaccio was a 14th-century Italian poet and important humanist during the Renaissance. In 1361, Boccaccio began composing ‘De Mulieribus Claris’ – a collection of biographical sketches of historical and mythological women. It is notable for being the first collection of biographies devoted to only women. (Brown). Boccaccio included descriptions of over 100 women including:
- Eve, the first woman in the Bible
- Isis, queen and goddess of Egypt
- Medusa, daughter of Phorcus
- Penelope, wife of Ulysses
- Sappho, woman of Lesbos
- Olympias, queen of Macedonia
- Cleopatra, queen of Egypt
