The 13th-century was the height of the Middle-Ages and saw the rise of scholars and prominent figures such as Aquinas, Roger Bacon, Albert Magnus, Francis Assisi, and Polo. However, another name should be included in this list – John Peckham. Peckham’s contributions to the study of optics and experimental sciences were a direct reflection of those of Roger Bacon, of whom Peckham was well-acquainted.

Peckham published various works on optics, philosophy, and theology, though none of them as important or popular as his ‘Perspectiva’. This work features a collection of various articles and reports on experiments on optics, physiology of the eye, and catoptrics. He discusses the reflections of light, and descriptions of rainbows and the galaxy, and an early description of a ‘camera obscura’! Peckham pushed the need for proofs of his discoveries, and in the 16th-century astronomers such as Harmann and Hamel propelled Peckham’s 200 year old ideas.

In addition to highly interesting and desirable contents, this book features 62 illustrations of Georg Harmann, a renowned 16th-century German astronomer who was focused on progressing the study of optics and astronomy. However, the editor of this 1556 edition was Paschasius Hamellius, an astrologer who was a staunch defender of old tables and schools of thought. (Crawford, 99).
