1530 Lives of Popes Platina Catholic Church Sacchi PAGAN Halley Comet Sixtus II
The standard reference work on papal history!
Bartolomeo Sacchi, or Platina, was a 15th-century Italian humanist who is most remembered for his book ‘Vitae Pontificum,’ or ‘Lives of the Popes.’ ‘Lives’ was an important work dedicated to the papacy of important Catholic popes, but Platina wrote the work through the lens of Roman history with obvious themes of paganism. This book was the first systematic handbook on papal history and praises the punishment of heresy throughout the Catholic Church. Not only was this a famous papal reference, but it was one of the first printed works to contain mention of Halley’s Comet. This became an important inclusion because this work often was the lynchpin in the conflict between religion and science.
This 1530 edition features the printer’s device of Jean Petit
