1509 Saint Venerable BEDE English Monk on Time Cosmology Augustine P. Incunable
Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th– and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology.
In 703 A.D., Bede composed a work on the development of time – “De Temporibus.” This book was one of the first works to contain details on the principles of Easter Computus, or figuring the date of Easter Sunday. Bede was known to contemplate and make theories on the cosmos, and thus was able to give instructions on computing Easter based on the sun, moon, and zodiac.
This book, a reissue of the 1505 first edition, also includes many of Bede’s ‘Lives’ in which he gives descriptions of important figures such as Saint Anastasius, Byzantine Emperor Phocas, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Alexander the Great.
