An exceedingly rare, COMPLETE collection of 4 volumes of the famous 15th-century Koberger Bible. This Greek and Latin Bible includes commentary of Nicolas de Lyra, a 13th-century doctor of theology at Paris, and, according to Darlow and Moule,

“[Lyra] may be said to mark the first beginnings of a school of natural exegesis.”

Lyra was the first printed biblical commentator and commentary was used by Martin Luther and influenced some of his writings. In fact, Luther is quoted as saying

“Without Lyra we would understand neither the Old or the New Testament.

Lyra’s influence was most important to the future of Bible commentary, as he took literal meanings of the text rather than inferring mystical or allegorical teachings.

Anton Koberger, most-known for his monumental work “Nuremberg Chronicle,” printed this illustrated Bible set. He established the first printing press in Nuremberg in 1470 and went on to publish some of the most important printed works from the 15th-century. This collection includes uniformly bound tomes including one tome from the 1497 issue.

One of the Frankfurt copies, part I only, made up with parts II-IV of the 1485 Koberger edition, was bought in 1486; the work must have been put in hand soon after the earlier edition (Ohly-Sack 561).
